Receipt Scanning Feature

Points Africa

Industry Design Project

Points Africa innovated a state-of-the-art digital coalition loyalty platform, designed to complement the expanding landscape of mobile electronic payments across Africa. The client wanted my team to add a feature to their mobile app where users can scan their receipts to process the receipt-parsed or extracted data by OCR and AI. We worked together for one month to create this feature which will be integrated into the app’s current processes and design system.

Competitive Analysis

The team analyzed six receipt scanning apps to determine the opportunities for our scanner. We wanted to ensure the best features were carried over into the design for maximum functionality. At the top of the list- separate scan features per receipt type, a filter to sort past receipts, tutorial for common issues, photo capture indicators, specific error messages, and the ability to manually edit after the upload.

User Journey

We decided to incorporate all of the possible outcomes into the user flow. The user will encounter a tutorial with instructions for adding a receipt and the option to upload or capture a photo of a receipt before manually editing any fields if needed. All the error states and situations were accounted for and a receipt scanning landing page served as a place to find past receipts.

Wireframes

We created wireframes to establish a clear, visual blueprint of the project's structure to share with the client. We also wanted full functionality for user testing to uncover any issues before delving into detailed design and development. This early-stage representation helped ensure alignment with the project's goals and facilitate more effective feedback and iteration.

Usability Testing

Moderated testing was completed with 3 remote participants. Each participant was asked to complete 2 tasks with the prototype: Find the Receipt Scanner and Scan Your Receipt. All users preferred the option with two separate icons on the bottom center nav but there was mixed feedback on the preferred receipt capture page. Ultimately, we chose the option with the 3 tabbed buttons at the top because it was the easiest path to locating receipt history.

Learnings

Collaborating with other designers and working for a client provided invaluable insights into teamwork, communication, and flexibility for myself as a junior designer. It showed me the importance of diverse perspectives for creativity and the need for clear, effective communication to align ideas and expectations. This experience enhanced my project management skills, emphasized balancing creative vision with client needs, and stressed the significance of adaptability. Learning to give and receive constructive feedback, managing time efficiently, and staying up to date with new tools and techniques are critical takeaways.
